Euro2001 – Day 4 – PONTARLIER to BESANCON

Thursday 2nd August 2001

“After Sbarro visit heading for hotel in Pirey”

After the visit to Sbarro’s there’s a great drive north to Besancon , a historic town where we spend the night. We are staying at the Hotel Climat de France tonight.

Turn right out of the Sbarro gates, to the end of the road and turn right to Morteau

There are several roundabouts. Follow the signs to the N57 to Besancon.

After 15 km/10 miles from Sbarro take a left turn to Ornans.

This is a great road with a sheer rock face climbing above the road to the right, with loose stones on the road, so beware. There are terrific views of the wooded valley to the left, the Rive Gauche le Bonnet - altitude 670 metres - and several interesting caves, including Gorges de Nouailles.

The road continues through several small villages to Ornans. Just before Ornans you find the canoe café – an interesting place for a coffee or some canoeing..!! Ornans is 35 km/22 miles from Sbarro.

In Ornans go through the main street (it’s quite long) and follow the road to Besancon, which is not signposted until the end of the street.

Enter Besancon through a town gate built into the rocks above the road.

Follow the signs to the Gare/tourist information/A36.

Follow signs to Vesoul.

As you leave the town you pass an Esso station. Go straight over next roundabout and take the turn to Pirey (65 km/40 miles from Sbarro).

Go left at the next roundabout.

Follow the road for a few hundred yards and you reach the Climat Hotel (see the local map).
