Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the Euro2001 tour all about? It all started in 1999 when Johnty Lyons and his family organised and hosted a very successful tour for Se7ens enthusiasts in Ireland – the JJ99 tour. During this trip the subject of a tour to Scandinavia came up and Vinnie agreed to organise Scandi2000. The trip itself was wonderful, not to mention the four great track days, and we all knew then that we wanted to do similar trips every year. From all the propositions we received, we have chosen to visit France and Switzerland and to book some of the available race circuits in those countries. How did you all meet each other initially?Well, most of us didn’t know each other before JJ99 tour. We were all subscribed to the Se7ens.net mailing list alongside about 600 other subscribers who discuss everything Se7ens related. Once we had got used to talking to each other we decided we should stop talking in the virtual world and meet up. After all, our hobby was cars so let's get out and use them..! The first meeting took place in March 99 using the Oxford Services on the M40 as a meeting point. The meeting was a roaring success. We talked a bit, kicked tyres, had coffee and by the time we were ready to move onto a "lunch" location it had warmed up quite nicely. Later, during the following week we talked some more about doing it again but this time we talked about it on the list. A comment from Johnty Lyons struck a chord with a few of us. He felt a little left out because in Northern Ireland there were very few people with Se7ens of any type, and he had only seen one or two. He didn't know any of them so his runs around the countryside were a one-man affair. "Why don't you all come to Ireland for a weekend?" he enquired. "Great roads".. etc.. was his sales pitch... and we were sold. We started arrangements for a summer trip to the geographical North of the island taking in the North and the Republic. This included setting up a sub-mailing list called JJ99, the intials standing for "Johnty's Jaunt". We would drive from coast to coast and back again..... Quite a few people got involved with the organisation, some booked ferries, some hotels, and all the time Johnty and his wife, Liz, recce'd a route for us so that when we got there we'd have a road book. What is Se7ens.net?The email list is about Se7ens... all types. Lotuses, Caterhams, Westfields, Daxes, Strikers, Locosts, Robin Hoods... all Se7ens. On top of that there is a greater love of sports cars in general. The "leaning" is towards kit or home-built cars though, and especially those which are intended as racers, even if they are road racers. An interest in Elises is natural as it comes from Lotus (who started the 7 off originally) and because they have a K series engine which is very popular at the moment in Sevens. Other models people are happy to see along include the Fisher/Sylva Fury, Spirit, Dutton Phaeton, Sylva Star... Everyone is welcome to subscribe to the main mailing list http://www.se7ens.netWhen is the planned start date of the Euro2001 tour?We plan to start officially on 29th July 2001 at the assembly point of Rouen. UK cars will come by the ferry / channel shuttle before this. We will then set off across France to Switzerland where we want to do a little bit of sightseeing, then back to France. The trip will invlude two track days and some Alpine driving. The trip ends in Paris on 9th August 2001 from where all UK cars will go to Calais to take La Shuttle or ferry to England.Who is organising the tour?
How many people are coming to Euro2001?At present (mid January 2001) we have the following score: 41 people registered with 26 cars, the list of “possibles” is 11 of whom 6 have cars, 3 of the 41 listed people have no car yet (Gareth and Mark Lyons, Peter Simons). This list will be of course changing as the time will get closer. Altogether the group should not exceed 30 cars. Most of them are Se7ens but other car types are welcome as well. To read the most updated list of people coming see: attendeesHow can I join the tour? The tour is opened to everyone driving/racing any sport car (all se7ens types, Lotus, Caterham, Westfield, Striker, Locost, and any others, anything without the roof). The simplest way is to subscribe to the Euro2001 list which will mean you will be up to date with Euro2001 news or fill in the form on this web site. You can also get in touch with the tour organiser Andy Robertson andrew.robertson1@virgin.netWhat is the estimated cost of the trip?UK tourers are likely to spend around GBP 1500 for a car and two occupants. This will include major expenses including hotels, petrol, meals, track sessions. At least we hope so for the moment :-) |
